Chance MUSIC was born from happenstance
After recording the Time album in 2011 Chance MEDIA Pty Ltd became a music publisher for the new songs Tommy Moeller wrote for the album.
The early days of Chance MEDIA Pty Ltd
Chance MEDIA Pty Ltd has been involved in the music business since 1993.
The company added web hosting design in 1998 with the arrival of the internet. We saw it’s relevance to the music business longer term.
As well as some music clients, we built The Royal Flying Doctor Service of Australia first website. They remained our clients for over 10 years.
We also became an outsource company for advertising agencies. Custom email marketing database systems we designed and built, were for huge international companies like Samsung, and large Australian public companies like Telstra.
The business growth to database systems lead to app development for the first iPhone then the first iPad. We became too successful at it. The company lost it’s focus on the music business. After 13 years we decided to drop all web & software clients, and go back to being a music company.
The change from software to music
Our expertise was put to good use. We created the Chance MUSIC Royalty database (CMRdb). Usually only large companies have systems like it.
In today’s music business streaming now dominates. So we have our own SQL database system. It takes seconds to add up cent fractions into dollars.
This site was established in 2020, to better showcase and promote our growing catalogue. It is being progressively developed to serve writers.
Many talented writers have decided to sign to Chance MUSIC publishing.
Experience behind Chance MUSIC
The founder behind the business is Nick Chance. He has decades of music business experience. Initially he started as a band manager, then a venue booker, promoter and has remained an entrepreneur from that.
Nick has also spent years as a production manager in music videos and film, after qualifying at the AFTRS. Award winning clips he worked on include the classic Apocalypso from Mental As Anything.
Recordings were made in top studios with acts under management. From vinyl in the early days to CDs later, and music videos. For acts managed he got signings to companies like Warner/Chappell, Polygram, EMI and BMG.
Among acts he managed, included was the legendary Sydney band X. He was the driving force during their re-emergence in the 80s. This was in the period of the bands greatest commercial success.
It included the 2nd album X – At Home With You, and he helped recruit Cathy Green to replace Steve Cafiero on drums a year before. The album featured Hunters & Collectors’ brass section too, when they were just beginning to become known.
He spent 3 years at RCA Records when it changed to RCA/BMG. His resignation as NSW Promotions Manager in 1989, was to go out on his own.
Australian music history was made
During these years he was integrally involved in marketing John Farnham’s Whispering Jack LP. It made music business history in Australia, selling three times the biggest prior highest selling album.
John still has the biggest selling album by an Australian artist, for 35 years to date.
After BMG, Nick set up an independent Publicity, Promotions and Management business. He was renown in Australia for his publicity work on national tours of USA Blues and roots artists. The first was legend Buddy Guy. A little known fact is that Jimi Hendrix copied much of his style and guitar prowess from Buddy Guy.
One client was promoter Peter Noble in his early years. The many blues tours Nick worked on helped establish an audience, acceptance and appreciation for Blues and roots music in Australia that didn’t exist prior.
It also laid that ground work for Peter Noble, who now runs the Byron Bay Bluesfest. Bluesfest reached it’s 31st year in 2020.
